The Republican Governors Association has announced a very strong fundraising quarter, taking in $19 million from April through June -- their largest fundraising quarter ever -- with $40 million in cash on hand for this year's statehouse races. From the RGA's press release: "The RGA's previous largest fundraising quarter occurred in the 4th quarter of 2009, when it raised $11.9 million. This quarter RGA raised $18.9 million. The RGA's former mid-year fundraising record was $15.1 million. RGA is at $28 million this year - almost double the earlier record. In 2006, the last comparable election year, the RGA raised $28...

Five Governor's Races Could Indicate GOP Success In 2012 By Chris Cillizza June 21, 2010 The roots of a Republican political renaissance in 2012 lie in the Rust Belt. That swath of manufacturing- based states in the Midwest -- Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan -- with tentacles that reach as far east as Pennsylvania, has been the epicenter of the economic difficulties in the country over the past few years. Each state is hosting a competitive gubernatorial race this fall. Republicans argue that a clean sweep (or close to it) would immediately change the electoral calculus heading into the nationwide redistricting...

WASHINGTON (AP) The nation's minority population is steadily rising and now makes up 35 percent of the United States, advancing an unmistakable trend that could make minorities the new American majority by midcentury. As white baby boomers age past their childbearing years, younger Hispanic parents are having children and driving U.S. population growth. "The aging of baby boomers beyond young middle age will have profound impacts on our labor force, housing market, schools and generational divisions on issues such as Social Security and Medicare," said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. "The engine of growth...

In the free-market Club for Growth's just-released 2009 Congressional Scorecard, the average score for Michigan's Republican members of Congress is more than a dozen percentage points below the average score of 82.7 percent posted by all GOP members in Congress. U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, scored 85 percent. His score is the best from Michigan and the only one to exceed the Republican national average. This is the fifth year in a row that Hoekstra has exceeded the GOP national average, going back to 2005, the first year that the Club's scorecard was tabulated. If Hoekstra's score is removed from...

n 1992, incumbent Republican Congressman Bob Davis chose not to run for re-election in the Michigan 1st District because he was one of the top five politicians implicated in the House check kiting scandal. Davis had represented the district covering the northern Lower Peninsula and the entire Upper Peninsula since 1978. Poor decisions made then by a state Republican establishment alienated many of the district's grass roots "true believers," opening the door for a former one-term Democrat state Representative, who won and went on to an 18-year Congressional career. Fast forward to 2010: The 1st District seat has once again...

The history of the races of mankind is a fascinating subject. Biologically, a race is generally thought of as a variety, or subspecies, within a given species. All the races are a part of the human race. We have made the term race to apply to skin color, but the dictionary defines race as "a class or kind of individuals with common characteristics, interests, appearances, or habits as if derived from a common ancestor." Where did we come from? The answers have always been with us, as presented in the original Table of Nations. What you are about to read...

DETROIT -- In metro Detroit, voters were asked to decide on everything ranging from mayor, council members, taxes and liquor license terms. Below is a breakdown of the most watched races. Macomb County: 12 cities and one township had elections. Six cities had mayoral matchups: Sterling Heights elected Richard Notte, Mount Clemens elected Barb Dempsey, Centerline elected David Hanselman, New Baltimore elected Thomas Goldenbogen, Roseville elected John Chirkun and Memphis elected Daniel Weaver. Countywide, voters decided on two issues. Residents voted in favor of a an executive-style government similar to those in Oakland and Wayne. Macomb County voters overwhelmingly approved...

...Two arresting new books, timed to coincide with Darwins 200th birthday, make the case that his epochal achievement in Victorian England can best be understood in relation to events involving neither tortoises nor finches on the other side of the Atlantic. Both books confront the touchy subject of Darwin and race head on; both conclude that Darwin, despite the pernicious spread of social Darwinism (the notion, popularized by Herbert Spencer, that human society progresses through the survival of the fittest), was no racist...

Just as soon as South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson announces that hes running to chair the national party, a story is disseminated by his opponents (note: fellow Republicans) referring to his recent membership in a whites-only country club. Dawson left the club in August, days before he first suggested that he might be looking to the national stage. As usual, the story says more about backwards South Carolina than it does about Dawson. My absolute favorite part is where the reporter and some pundits do a little guessing on the reason for his separation from the club. Its...
